As the parent of an adult son with Down syndrome, I feel I know what is needed in order for adults with developmental disabilities to live full, healthy, independent lives. Some of the greatest needs are nutrition education, cooking skills and active social lives. I have always loved to cook and feel good nutrition has a huge impact on how we feel and live. My youngest son, Pete, has down syndrome. He was my inspiration for creating Healthy Habits Cook Club. Sharing meals around a table of family or friends has always been a wonderful part of my life.
After Pete was born, I enrolled him in our local early intervention program to learn all I could to ensure he developed to his fullest potential. I was employed as a parent advocate for 23 years, helping parents of children newborn to age 3 to navigate the services available in our county, and offering support and resources. I also developed a parent mentor program where parents of children with the same diagnosis were matched for support.
When Pete graduated from high school it was socially isolating. I realized many of the children I had met in the early intervention program were also transitioning into the adult world. I wanted to create something for adults with Developmental Disabilities to help them take control of their own health, while helping them with independent living skills. Our classes continue to be a place these adults come together to learn, grow and enjoy a meal together. Our volunteers always leave with their cups overflowing and many new friends!
